breadfruit

at first look, the breadfruits resemble durians, but the durian fruit is native to southeast asia. even though there are similarities in the appearance and nutritional value, both belong to different plant species.

Breadfruit

breadfruit is the staple food in the south pacific, spread by by polynesian across the southern seas during their long sojourns. it is a member of the mulberry family but much larger. there are both seedless and seeded breadfruit cultivars. the surface of breadfruit is rough and covered with small polygonal shapes that sometimes terminate in pliable spines.

breadfruit can be eaten raw or cooked, and when cooked, it’s often boiled or roasted. the unripened fruit can be used to make flour, and when baked, yields a texture and flavor similar to wheat bread.

it’s unlikely the organizers made a mistake on the species of the fruit, however, the exhibition revolves around the rainforests in southeast asia. it might have been a negligible mistake to some, but definitely threw me into a confusion.
