earthhour 2011 singapore celebration
march 26, 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm marked the earth hour, where lights will be switched off around the globe for 60+ minutes. the plus symbol is a commitment to our actions that goes beyond the hour. the official celebration party was held at the marina bay from 5 pm onwards, and to commemorate the earth hour, participants will walk in the dark around the marina bay area, with sights of the marina bay sands, esplanade along the route.
straw mats had been provided for the participants to laze around the stage, where we were entertained by jack and rai, and other local singers and groups.
the wwf panda drew the attention of the kids – i would prefer the panda to be round though.
by 8.30 pm, lights went out from some of the buildings surrounding the promontory, notably, ntuc, stanchart, the esplanade. it was all bright and warm at the marina bay sands, which it would unimaginable for a casino to be running without electricity for just an hour. some walked in the dark with red blinking ears, while some walked in lighted candles.
thankfully the night was windy and the walk was pleasant, with proper signages and crowd control. the walk was stipulated to be completed within an hour, and we took an hour and a half. that concluded my first and memorable night walk in the year 2011.
