april’s fool day – conficker

today’s the day where, presumably, the conficker worm will carry out further action (damage) on computers by exploiting the windows remote procedure call vulnerability.

this is one worm that receives our company-wide attention due to an infected server in Europe that resulted in account lockouts.

security vendors, like mcafee released a memo since last week. updated information on the prevention was released in the beginning of this week.

the basic protection against conficker or other worm/malware:

– keep system patches up to date
– maintain a good antivirus software
– disable autorun
– use strong password
– secured shared folders

eEye security provides a free scan tool to check for servers who are vulnerable to the worm while major antivirus provider released the detection and removal tool this morning.
