steamboat with hainanese chicken rice
tired of the common ma-la and “ying yang” mixture of soup base, we braved the 10km walk to our “childhood” steamboat place.
fancy a plate of hainanese chicken rice with traditional steamboat (gas-powered)? golden mile thien kee steamboat restaurant has been around for as long as I’d stayed in beach road. the irony part is that my buddies and i started to miss the traditional steamboat after moving out of beach road area, considering the last time i’d visited was probably 10 years ago.
the food and place is pretty much similar, except the restaurant has expanded to a vacant shop opposite the main restaurant. the place was crowded but finding seats wasn’t an issue for us when we went during the peak dinner hours.
the chicken soup base is clear and bland, with oil and soy sauce as the only accompanying condiment. you obtain the taste and flavor of the soup from the steamboat dishes. for a group of three, a standard medium-sized portion will include 2 plates with a mixture of pork slices, fish slices, cuttlefish, prawns, cockles, pig liver, fishballs, fish maw, sea cucumber, chicken’s fee and chinese lettuce.you can also order separate plates of any particular meat or seafood.
i will definitely return to reminisce with my parents and brother, even though i doubt my brother will be interested, since we used to shun away from traditional steamboat.
