mother’s day lunch @ moi lum

i’ve taken a keen interest in food photography recently. my pictures are still very amateurish and has not yet reached the level to cause salivation from the viewers. ever since i started my diet, i avoid eating out to prevent myself from overindulgence. i do indulge in little treats, like ice-cream, once in a month.

the mother’s day lunch is a tantalizing family outing, not to be missed, since i would have the opportunity to practice on food photography, after a hiatus of close to half a year. moi lum, located in tanjong pagar , is a cosy restaurant serving cantonese cuisine. the place wasn’t crowded and our food were being served between 10 to 15 minutes interval.

one of their signature and my favourite dish, the majestic crispy fried chicken is worth the order.

the skin is crispy and the texture of the meat is just nice – soft and tender. dipping the crispy skin and meat in salt does help in enhancing the overall taste of the chicken (a pinch of salt is sufficient!).

the yam pot can be served either with prawns or scallops, or a mixture of both (top up another $7) and we ordered the one with scallops.

the yam tastes soft and light while crispy on the outside, and it is not overwhelming heavy. the yam pot we ordered, consisted of a mixture of scallops, cashew nuts, mushrooms, carrots and mini sweet corn. it’s a pity though, that there were only a few pieces of scallops, and we had one each (my mum had 2).

the crispy oat prawns didn’t turn out to be crispy, as the name suggests.

the braised spare ribs is soft and tender, but not without a layer of fats and i would have fell in love with it in the past. i reckon i’m used to having light food and my taste buds are accustomed to light gravy and soupy dishes. the vegetable that comes together with the dish does complement well with the ribs.

one piece of the spare rib is sufficient to curb my craving for fatty meat.

the golden coin beancurd was the first dish served and we were already famished by then.

the overall presentation doesn’t look enticing, with bits of orange carrot, brown mushroom, green peas and the golden beancurd. one bite into the soft beancurd and one can feel the gravy oozing out into your mouth. the dish is refreshing for a start as i would normally order deep fried mashed tofu with seafood or hotplate beancurd.

even though i’m disappointed in some of the dishes, i’m overall happy with the level of service and ambiance of the restaurant.
