new virus/malware/worm on the loose?

conficker might have been an april’s fool day joke, but certainly not the unknown virus/malware/worm that hit the systems since lunch time today.

while all fingers were pointing to the domain controllers, i struggled with the installation of patches on one of the affected machine. 4 hours spent on checking on the domain controllers to ensure all ds related services work and troubleshooting the windows updates failure. another 4 hours more to patch up all the affected systems.

if we attempted to check for all possible causes before ruling out the real cause, probably the resolution time would be reduced by half. there are too many “ifs” but today’s outbreak is yet another valuable lesson learnt.
