the kranji memorials, dedicated to the brave souls who died defending singapore and malaya against the japanese forces during world war II, is located in the northern part of singapore. the memorial is made up of three cemeteries, namely the kranji war memorial, the military cemetery and the singapore state cemetery.

during the japanese occupation, the war cemetery was a hospital burial ground and it became a military cemetery at the end of the war. the cemetery is the final resting place for 4,458 allied servicemen in marked graves, of which more than 850 of these graves are unidentified.

the walls on the war memorial had been inscribed with over 24,000 names of allied servicemen whose bodies were never found. it is set on a hilly terrain with a command view over the straits of johore to the north and over the hills of singapore to the south.

the north of the cemetery is the state cemetery and burial site of Inche Yusof bin Ishak and Benjamin Henry Sheares (Dr), the 1st and 2nd presidents of singapore.
