japanese ramen after so long
ramen shops are sprouting across the island, and i’d yet to follow the japanese noodles craze. i favored soba noodles over udon or ramen, and my last authentic and remarkable bowl of ramen, would have to be during my business trip to tokyo in 2007.
daikokuya ramen dining, a small restaurant in the corner of myvillage in serangoon gardens, was where i had the ramen after so long. daikokuya, which means “god of wealth” in japanese, serves good ramen at affordable prices. it has a selection of the thick and curly ramen or the thin and straight ramen, with either the miso, shoyu (soy) or shio (salt) soup base. if you are not a fan of ramen, there are curry rice selections to choose from.
i had the miso cha shu ramen while the hubby opted for the miso spicy ramen.
the broth is thick and full of flavor (the first time i finished the ramen with the broth), though a tad too salty for the hubby. according to the staff who served us, the ramen goes well with the specially made vinegar and sesame seeds. the combination is supposed to enhance the flavor of the broth and the ramen. i added the sesame seed, without the vinegar. sadly that did not further excite my taste buds. the cha shu is soft and tender, and i love the thin layer of fats that hold the piece of meat together.
the gyoza were served when we were almost done with ramen, which was fine, as it was still hot as we wolfed them down our stomachs. however, i find them a little dry. the service is good and the staff are relatively attentive. it’s a pity i do not have the opportunity to try the nitamago. the reviews i’d read so far has been good.
serangoon garden is our recent hangout venue during the weekends, and i will be back for the shio and shoyu ramen.
